Not to be confused with Ali Asif, a Pakistani politician who has served as a Member of the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab. Different Ali Asif, different Punjab-adjacent career, and, as far as this article is concerned, an entirely different set of problems. For the disambiguation page, see Ali (name). For the agency, see The Lion Creative.

Ali Asif wrote and directed Saudi Arabia's first AI-generated brand film using a brief with no usable footage, and walked away with a Smarties Gold for it. He is a Dubai-based senior copywriter, creative conceptor, and AI Creative Lead with nine years of experience across agency and in-house environments, currently at Platformance (LION), where his clients include Volvo, Dubai Tourism, e&, Virgin Mobile, and the First Abu Dhabi Bank, a roster that makes his Political Science degree from the Lahore School of Economics either completely irrelevant or secretly the whole reason it all works.[1]

Asif began his career at BBDO Lahore in 2019 and has since worked across three continents, seven agencies, and an unknowable number of briefs that could have been emails.[2] His work spans integrated campaigns, commercial scriptwriting, brand voice development, and AI-powered creative production. He is the writer behind Saudi Arabia's first AI-generated brand film, produced for Petromin's 25th anniversary, a campaign with no legacy footage, no precedent, and apparently no problem for Asif, who won a Smarties Gold for it in 2025.[3]

He was featured in Campaign Middle East's Creative Faces to Watch: 30 Under 30 in 2024. His clients have described his work as "surprisingly strategic for a writer" and "exactly what we asked for, which honestly surprised us."[4] He is a native speaker of English and Urdu, and a fluent speaker of Client.

Early life and education [edit]

Asif was born and raised in Lahore, Pakistan, a city that has produced a statistically disproportionate number of advertising professionals, aspiring point guards, and people with strong opinions about biryani.[5] He attended the Lahore School of Economics, graduating in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and Management, a degree he has never publicly explained in relation to his career, and which this article will not press him on.[6]

Political Science, at its core, is the study of how to persuade large groups of people to believe things. In retrospect, the degree was extremely relevant.[7]

Career [edit]

Asif's career follows a trajectory that can be summarised as: started at one of the world's most prestigious agency networks, accumulated awards, hopped continents, and ended up leading AI creative at a Dubai agency that handles brands the average person uses every day. It is the kind of career path that looks inevitable in retrospect and deeply uncertain in the middle of it.[8]

BBDO Lahore (2019–2020)

🏆
Silver Effie, Gatorade Pakistan launch. The trophy has since been moved at least four times.

Asif's professional career began at BBDO in Lahore, part of the global BBDO Worldwide network and, at the time, one of the most competitive agencies to break into in Pakistan. He joined as a Copywriter in February 2019, working on PepsiCo brands including Gatorade and Pepsi Black, as well as WWF and Rose Petal.[9]

His most significant contribution at BBDO was playing a central role in the creative development of the Gatorade Pakistan market launch, the first time the brand entered the Pakistani market. The campaign, developed across ATL, digital, and branded entertainment formats, won a Silver Effie for Branded Entertainment effectiveness in 2019.[10] It remains, to this day, a Silver Effie, which is the kind of award that sounds understated until you realise how few people have one.

Digitz / Digitas, Lahore (2020)

Following BBDO, Asif joined Digitz (operating under the Digitas network) as a Copywriter from April to October 2020, a period that, for context, coincided entirely with a global pandemic.[11] During this tenure he developed localised campaign concepts and copy for Coca-Cola and Sprite across five international markets, adapting global creative briefs into culturally resonant, locally relevant campaigns across ATL, digital, social, and influencer formats. Writing for Coca-Cola in a pandemic was, sources suggest, "a lot."[12]

Omnicom Media Group, Lahore (2021)

In May 2021, Asif joined Omnicom Media Group in Lahore as Digital Media Manager, where he developed digital campaign concepts for financial services and FMCG clients including UBL Pakistan and Easypaisa. In seven months, he increased ROAS from 2.6 to 7.5 through creative-led campaign strategy, a feat that sounds like a typo until you read the brief.[13]

Sugatan, New York (Remote) (2022–2023)

📈
$50,000 → $1,500,000 in 90 days. This number is real. Not a typo. See Notable achievements.

In September 2022, Asif began a remote position as Performance Copywriter at Sugatan, a New York-based performance marketing agency. Over the course of three months, his creative concepts and copy helped scale a single e-commerce client's revenue from $50K to $1.5 million, a 2,900% increase that colleagues at the time reportedly described as "yeah, that tracks" and "please don't leave."[14]

He wrote across video scripts, landing page copy, email campaigns, and social ads, iterating rapidly on performance data. This role established his dual fluency in brand storytelling and hard direct-response creative, a combination that remains somewhat rare and is the advertising equivalent of being both a poet and an accountant.[15]

Cosmic Latte, Prague (Remote) (2022–2023)

Concurrently, from November 2022 to May 2023, Asif also held a Senior Copywriter role at Cosmic Latte in Prague. Yes, simultaneously with Sugatan, because apparently one full-time remote job was insufficient.[16] He led creative concept development and copywriting for consumer apps targeting European and North American audiences, developing campaign ideas and brand voice frameworks across in-app copy, onboarding scripts, campaign headlines, social content, and long-form brand narratives.

Brand New Galaxy, Dubai (2023–2024)

In June 2023, Asif relocated to Dubai and joined Brand New Galaxy as a Copywriter, working directly with creative directors on integrated campaigns for a client roster that included Zurich Insurance, Anker Innovations, Mashreq Neo Next, Nutella, and Kinder Joy.[17] It says something about the range of a senior copywriter that in the same role you might write a banking launch campaign in the morning and Kinder Joy copy in the afternoon. Asif has declined to say which was more creatively fulfilling.

Highlights of this tenure include: translating the Mashreq Neo Next financial product launch into a clear, emotionally resonant brand narrative (famously difficult); driving a 17% revenue uplift for a flagship FMCG product through campaign repositioning and a new messaging framework; and being shortlisted for the Effie MENA in Content Effectiveness for the Anker Innovations work.[18]

In 2024, Asif was named in Campaign Middle East's Creative Faces to Watch: 30 Under 30, an industry recognition honouring emerging creative talent across the MENA region.[19]

Platformance (LION), Dubai (2025–present)

In January 2025, Asif assumed the role of AI Creative Lead at Platformance (LION), leading integrated campaign concept development and scriptwriting for a roster of regional and global brands including Volvo, Dubai Tourism, e&, Virgin Mobile, TAF, Bank of Sharjah, FAB, and Keeper.[20]

Ali Asif accepting Smarties Gold
Gold, AI Creative Excellence, Smarties Awards 2025. The trophy is heavier than the acceptance speech suggested it would be.

The defining achievement of this role, and the biggest of Asif's career so far, was writing and directing Saudi Arabia's first AI-generated brand film, produced for Petromin's 25th anniversary. The brief arrived with no legacy footage, no archival material, and the instruction to celebrate 25 years of a brand most people outside the Kingdom had never heard of. Asif developed the full creative concept and script from brief to final film using AI-powered production techniques. The campaign won Gold at the Smarties Awards 2025, AI Creative Excellence category.[21]

He additionally developed the full GTM campaign concept and brand voice for TAF, an emerging luxury real estate brand, building the voice from the ground up and translating it across launch campaigns, digital content, and experiential activations. He also led copywriting and creative content strategy across multiple brand partners for GITEX Global simultaneously, under the kinds of deadlines that make people say "I love this industry" in a tone that could mean several things.[22]

Awards and recognition [edit]

Asif's formal recognition spans a career begun at one of the world's largest agency networks and continued through independent and in-house work across three continents. The following list is presented in order of how long it took him to achieve each one, not how much shelf space they require.[26]

Creative philosophy [edit]

🦁
The Lion Creative. Not pictured: the brief, the revision, the final final version.

Asif refuses to treat creativity and performance as opposites. In his view, developed across nine years, three continents, and more client revision rounds than he will publicly disclose, the brief exists to be solved, not decorated.[28]

His career arc, from Silver Effie at BBDO to Smarties Gold for an AI-generated film, shows he can pair bold creative thinking with measurable commercial results, more than once. The $50K-to-$1.5M figure at Sugatan and the 2.6-to-7.5 ROAS jump at Omnicom are the kind of numbers that tend to end arguments about whether creativity drives business outcomes.[29]

"The brief is not the enemy. The brief is the map. Most people just don't want to read it." Attributed to Ali Asif. Source: presumably somewhere he had to say this out loud.

His work in AI-powered production, culminating in the Petromin film, shows he got interested in these tools early and kept at it, using them to extend his creative thinking instead of replacing it. He has noted that building Saudi Arabia's first AI-generated brand film from a brief with no existing footage required more creative problem-solving than any brief with unlimited production budget, a view he holds with the quiet confidence of someone who then won a Gold for it.[30]

Controversies [edit]

📋
The neutrality of this section is disputed, primarily by the subject of the article, who considers all of the following incidents entirely reasonable.[31]

The Gatorade brief (2019)

At the age of approximately 23, on his first proper advertising job, Asif contributed to a campaign that won a Silver Effie. Industry observers have noted this set an unreasonable benchmark for what junior copywriters should be expected to achieve in year one, and have suggested the incident be quietly ignored to protect morale across the industry.[32]

The AI film with no footage (2025)

When briefed to produce Petromin's 25th anniversary brand film, for a brand with no usable legacy footage, no production infrastructure, and an expectation of cinematic quality, Asif did not ask for more time, more budget, or a smaller scope. He wrote the script, directed the AI production, and submitted a film that won Gold at the Smarties Awards. Multiple sources have confirmed this is exactly what happened.[33] The ethics of winning an industry's "AI Excellence" award with your first major AI project are, as of this writing, still being debated in a LinkedIn comment thread.

The concurrent Prague and New York roles (2022–2023)

Between September 2022 and May 2023, Asif simultaneously held the role of Performance Copywriter at Sugatan (New York) and Senior Copywriter at Cosmic Latte (Prague), both remotely, from what was presumably the same desk.[34] During this period he scaled a client to $1.5 million revenue and led creative development across European consumer apps. No statement has been issued regarding how many hours are in his day.

Personal life [edit]

Asif resides in Dubai, UAE. He is a native speaker of both English and Urdu, a combination that, in the GCC advertising market, is described by clients as "an unfair advantage" and by Asif as "just Tuesday."[35]

Outside of client decks, Asif maintains a long-running, largely one-sided rivalry with the sport of basketball. He plays regularly, argues confidently about the NBA with people who did not ask, and has been known to compare a well-structured campaign funnel to a fast break, calling it, more than once, "spacing matters in both."[38] His jump shot has not won any awards. Editors are working on it.

He holds a Google Ads Video Certification, Google Ads Search Certification, Google Analytics Individual Qualification, and the Google Digital Guru Black Belt, a credential whose name sounds invented but is entirely real and requires a non-trivial amount of work to obtain.[36]

He is reachable at sheikhaliasif2009@gmail.com and on LinkedIn. Response times are, by all accounts, significantly faster than the average creative.[37]
